In 2019, I caught a photo of this man playing accordion in the streets of Florence. I was fearful that he was lost in the Covid pandemic that killed more than 198,000 Italians. But this year, there he was, playing on.

Workers at the GKN auto parts plant have kept up an occupation for five years after 422 of them received dismissal notices in a mass email in July 2021. The British-based holding company that ran GKN sent that notice the moment a Covid-related government moratorium on worker layoffs ran out. GKN workers gather on a Florence street to continue the protest.
