The photos here were taken in and around Pittsburgh, with the exception of the homeless man with his worldly possessions stacked beneath a tree in a park in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Some, such as the man with the missing leg and the broken soul peering from a tent flap, were taken in a homeless encampment tucked under a highway bridge and hard by a set of railroad tracks on the South Side slopes.

The man with the coffee cup and missing eye gave his name as Alan Monroe. He endured the winters and rains of Market Square for years before dying in 2020.

As for the man surrounded by his belongings gave his name as Courtney Hester. In a lifetime racking up an impressive catalogue of offenses against the state, he lost his apartment and moved into the city’s park, next to the spot where a statue of Robert E. Lee had been torn down.

Like Lee, Courtney Hester found himself evicted from the park as well.
